Since this is a live course, the Facebook group is where I’ll be giving feedback and encouragement for the 3 weeks.
I’m so excited I took the class and really pleased to learn that my designs are going to be in stores.
Also being in a group setting really inspired me, it was wonderful to be introduced to new artists and see other students progress throughout the course. I really enjoyed the structure, the pace, and the feedback that this course gave me. I already signed up for the next one in January to keep building my portfolio!
I made the best decision EVER to be part of this class. I love Victoria’s briefs and the colour palettes are very inspiring.
The class size is perfect and Victoria is very attentive with all the students. She often leaves feedback and comments on people’s work on the Facebook group and Instagram page.
Since this class started, a few people have asked me about Victoria’s class and I have to 100% recommend this class for anyone.

“This was a wonderful class! The group was so supportive and Victoria is a wonderful teacher. I love Christmas as a subject matter but there are so many different styles I often have trouble telling one from the other.
The mood boards were amazing and absolutely beautiful! The class also helped me sort out what my strengths and weaknesses are regarding different Christmas styles. I’m so happy I signed up for this class and can’t wait to start the next Create Christmas!”
“I really enjoy making Christmas art, so this class was definitely for me!
Victoria has thoughtfully put together projects based on trends in the marketplace and even includes tips on how to get started.
You really get a bang for your buck with this class: great briefs, trend research, color palettes, industry tips and it's not overwhelming in that it's only 3 weeks long! Looking forward to taking it again!”
“As a new-comer to the art world, I confess to being nervous when I joined. I wasn’t sure if I would soon be drowning in lots of technical terms and expected to perform way beyond my current levels of expertise. However, this was not the case at all.
Victoria’s briefs were packed with lots of information and examples that were clear and inspirational to follow.
The Facebook group was friendly and very supportive. That in itself is very inspiring! I warmly recommend this course to anyone whatever their experience and level of expertise - there is something for everyone here!”
“I am so glad I joined the Create Christmas class! The briefs, trend boards, colour palettes, and industry information were invaluable.
The Facebook group was supportive and it was great to see everyone’s art and getting feedback.”
“I took Create Christmas 1 and absolutely loved it! So much so that I signed up for Create Christmas 2. Victoria created such an inspiring course with her industry insights, project briefs, and gorgeous style boards! I had so much fun working on the assignments and seeing everyone else’s work as well. I look forward to seeing what other courses she may come up with...Victoria, how about a course just like this only NOT Christmas...style boards/briefs for current trends. I would love to keep working! Thanks so much!”
“Create Christmas was my first class with Victoria Johnson, and I absolutely loved it. Each week we received a new brief with a very inspiring trend board, a gorgeous color palette, and direction for each assignment.
The Facebook group is great, and I felt very inspired by all the gorgeous art from the students in the class, that showed up in my newsfeed every day.
I would highly recommend this class, it is well worth it, and I am very much looking forward to taking the next class with Victoria.”
“I LOVED this Create Christmas course! As an illustrator, it's sometimes hard to know what to create next & whether or not it is relevant to what art buyers/directors are wanting. Victoria's briefs are PERFECT. Very informative, with lots of industry info, and color palettes. This was my first class with Victoria, and I've already signed up for another!”
“Victoria’s Create Christmas course has been a great experience. The insight, information, ideas, and support you get are the best I’ve come across for an online course. The feedback either from Victoria directly (amazing!) or from the dedicated Facebook group is also second to none. I am so pleased I’ve taken this course and very much look forward to more.”
“LOVE Victoria's courses! I appreciate her fun informative briefs and professional point of view. I'm a fan of her art, so it's nice to hear her feedback on work. The class is low pressure, which is nice, especially if you have other work you need to do (even when you'd rather be making Christmas cards ;) Thanks, Victoria!”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you! This course is filled with a ton of information. Victoria arms you with fantastic, on-trend briefs, beautiful mood boards, loads of suggestions on technique, and a plethora of ideas to execute.
Bar none this course and Explore Florals are the absolute best courses I have taken online. I will take them again and again. Thanks so very much Victoria for all that you do!”
Hello! I’m Victoria Johnson.
With over 24 years of commercial art industry experience, I know first-hand what it takes to create christmas art that captures the ATTENTION of art directors around the WORLD.
Creating for such a specific market can be daunting, but I’ll show you how to see Christmas in a new and exciting way that will inspire you to create magical pieces for your portfolio.
I’m sharing my knowledge in powerful but bite-sized lessons that have helped over 2000 students increase their chances of selling their art, without compromising their own taste and style.
See you inside.
There are no videos in any of the courses (so far!).
All course material is provided in written form. Create Collections has downloadable PDFs for all the course materials. Explore Florals and Create Christmas have limited downloadable material.
Create Collections offers lifetime access. Create Christmas and Explore Florals are available for a limited time.
Until further notice, yes.
I issue a new brief every Monday and the goal is to complete one finished design/project per week—or more if you find time. I’d imagine an hour or so a day would be enough, depending on your approach.
I’m active in the group and comment frequently. I care a lot about what you’re doing and want to be encouraging and motivating. However, I don't (and can't!) comment on every single post.
If you’re interested in an in-depth discussion with me, please visit my Consultations page.
You definitely don’t need to join the Facebook group to take the course as it’s all provided in written form in an online ‘classroom’ but I highly recommend it as it’s such a supportive community. You’ll enjoy seeing what everyone else is doing and receiving kind, valuable feedback on your own work. I’m in the group commenting often.
By ‘live’, I mean that the course takes place within a set time-frame (the duration of the course) where everyone contributes to an active, private Facebook group - rather than it being an evergreen course that’s self-paced.
There’s always a very engaged and supportive community. You can jump on at any time of the day and students come from all over the world and lots of different time zones.
There are no FB Lives. All course materials are provided in written form.
It’s definitely not necessary to use digital media to take my courses. A lot of designers create art for this industry by hand and I try to structure the courses so that they’re useful to everyone, no matter what materials they like to use. I do a lot of hand-painted art myself. I think it has a lovely quality to it!
In order to sell hand-rendered images, you’ll need a very basic working knowledge of Photoshop in order to clean up your designs and present them as editable, digital files - but it’s easy to acquire those skills via online tutorials and you’ll need to learn less than a tenth of what the software can actually do.
For my courses, it’s enough that you can snap a pic and upload a jpeg so we can admire your work and support you!
On the other hand, lots of my students are brilliant digital artists. If you’re interested in learning more about digital art, you’ll enjoy seeing the fabulous possibilities.
Have a look at the beautiful student art here. I think you’ll be surprised at the variety.
Beginners are very welcome.
Some of the concepts may be completely new to you but a lot of beginners join me and find the courses worthwhile because they learn so much. I try hard to ensure the Facebook Group is kind, supportive and safe and this works well for beginners because the more experienced artists in the group offer lots of help.
I think you’ll find this testimonial helpful. Roberta is talking about a Create Christmas class but I think a lot of artists have this kind of positive experience in all the classes.
“I joined this class on a whim and then regretted it when I started to see the names and work of my classmates because I am just dipping my toes into the world of surface design and illustration. I thought I was going to feel horribly out of place with all the professional designers in the class, but as soon as the first brief was up I was totally inspired and went right to work. The only thing I didn’t like about the class is that it was too short. I had so many ideas of illustrations I wanted to do each week, I kept hoping the weeks would magically lengthen themselves.
I never for one moment felt out of place. The whole class community was accepting and encouraging. If you are unsure if this type of illustration is for you - take the class. If you are currently illustrating but in a rut - take the class. You are sure to be filled with so many ideas you won’t be able to get to them all. If you are a seasoned pro and want a challenge - take the class. Get a fresh perspective on illustrating and industry insight to other possibilities. If you’re here reading this wondering if you should take the class - take the class. It is a small investment regardless if your focus is as a professional or hobbyist.”

The course is not a technical pattern-making course in any way - but it’s full of information that will help you create cohesive, attractive and well-composed designs (including patterns) that will impress art directors.
That’s not within the scope of the course but have you downloaded my Free Guide to Getting Your Artwork In Front of Clients? You may find it helpful. Sign up here. I also offer consultations at certain times of the year.
